Nscale, Rival Of CoreWeave And Nebius, Files For IPO

Nscale, a cloud computing rival of CoreWeave (CRWV) and Nebius (NBIS), has filed for an initial public offering in New York. The U.K.-based company filed its S-1 for Nscale stock late Friday and aims to raise up to $3 billion at a valuation of approximately $30 billion.
  • Nscale is an AI infrastructure company founded and co-owned by Josh Payne (CEO) and Nathan Townsend, originating from the crypto mining firm Arkon Energy.

Nscale is among a wave of artificial intelligence "neoclouds." Neoclouds build data centers designed from scratch for crunching artificial intelligence workloads.

They rent out Nvidia (NVDA)-equipped computer servers.

Neoclouds Crusoe, Lambda Explore IPOs
Wall Street analysts say neoclouds Crusoe and Lambda are also exploring IPOs, according to reports.

In August, Crusoe reportedly met with bankers about a potential listing. Crusoe then raised $3.9 billion at a $30.9 billion valuation in September. The funding round gives Crusoe enough capital to wait for favorable market conditions.

Like CoreWeave, Nscale has evolved from cryptocurrency mining into AI cloud computing. Chief Executive Josh Payne spun Nscale out of Arkon Energy, a bitcoin-mining data-center company, in 2024.

Nscale initially focused on European data centers powered by renewable energy, particularly hydroelectric power in Norway. It's now expanding into the U.S., U.K., Portugal and Iceland.

Nscale Data Center Expansion
Nscale has 17 contracted data center sites of which five are active, with a total of 1.37 gigawatts of active and contracted capacity. It plans to expand to 10 gigawatts. Data centers are often measured in terms of their power consumption using gigawatts.

While some analysts project a big AI market opportunity for CoreWeave and other neoclouds, others fret about customer concentration and high debt.

Meanwhile, CoreWeave hosts its annual customer conference on Sept. 30.
